Purpose:
To celebrate the 10th Anniversary of the John A. Hartford Foundation’s Geriatric Social Work Initiative (GSWI).

Contest Sponsors:

  • The Hartford Foundation, and
  • The Association for Gerontology Education in Social Work (AGE-SW)

The contest is being coordinated by the The Gerontological Society of America (GSA), 1220 L St, NW, Suite 901, Washington, DC 20005.  Questions should be directed to Julia Meashey at the GSA via e-mail (jmeashey@geron.org) or telephone (202-842-1275).

Contest Theme:

This is Social Work & Aging… YouTubeTM Student Contest  - a contest for social work students to share why gerontology is important to them.

Official Contest Dates
*The Contest officially opens on Monday, June 16, 2008.
*Submissions must be received by 11:59:59 PM (ET) on Sunday, October 5, 2008.
*Top 10 submissions will be announced by Monday, October 27, 2008.
*5 Winners will be announced by Friday, November 7, 2008.

To Enter, Participants Must

  • Create a video responding to the prompt: “This is social work & aging….”
    • Incorporate this phrase in some way into the video
    • The phrase can be interpreted in many ways. Examples include, but are not limited to:
      • Why did you choose gerontological social work?
      • What is social work’s role in aging?
      • Why is gerontology important?
      • Why should the public pay attention to aging issues?

Note: How participants choose to respond to the prompt is entirely up to the individual. The answer can be personal and/or scholarly.  However, all entries must incorporate the phrase “This is social work & aging…” in order to be eligible for judging.

  • Create an original video (length not to exceed 2 minutes) and upload it to the YouTubeTM in accordance with these Official Rules.  All video submissions must be uploaded to YouTubeTM no later than 11:59:59 PM (ET) on October 5, 2008. 
    • If you are not an existing user of YouTubeTM, you must create a free user account before your video submission can be uploaded to the site.
    • When you register your YouTubeTM account, you will be required to agree to the YouTubeTM Terms of Use, located at www.youtube.com/t/terms, and the YouTubeTM Privacy Policy, located at www.youtube.com/t/privacy.
    • Once registered with YouTubeTM, upload your video to your account.
    • Next, visit the “AGE-SW/GSWI This is Social Work & Aging… YouTubeTM Student Contest Group” (http://www.youtube.com/group/SocialWorkAging) and click “Add Videos” and follow the instructions to add your video submission to the group.
    • To be eligible for this contest, videos must be added to this group and remain posted in this group until at least November 7, 2008.  For help uploading your video and adding it to a group, see the YouTubeTM Help section at http://help.youtube.com.

Maximum one (1) video submission per person.  All video submissions must adhere to the requirements described in these Official Rules to be considered in the judging of this Contest.

Contest Criteria
To be eligible for the contest participants must:

  • Be 18 years of age or older.
  • Be a social work student(s) enrolled in a BSW, MSW, or Social Work PhD level program during the 2007-2008 and/or 2008-2009 school year.
    • Social work students who graduated in 2008 are eligible if they meet the above criteria.
  • Identify a primary contact if a group or collective of students decide to enter as a team.

Your video must:

  • Address the theme: This is Social Work & Aging…
  • Last no longer than 2 minutes

Note: The maximum file size for any video file uploaded to YouTubeTM is 100MB. Video file(s) submitted to your YouTubeTM account must be provided in one of the following file formats: avi, mov, mpg, or wmv.  See the YouTubeTM User Terms of Use for additional details.

Judging criteria
A panel of judges consisting of representatives from AGE-SW, the Geriatric Social Work Initiative (GSWI) Program, and the John A. Hartford Foundation will judge each eligible video submission and select the winners based on the following criteria:

  • Accuracy of aging and social work content
  • Quality of aging and social work content presented
  • Creativity in how the story is told
  • Creativity of visual presentation

The top ten entries will be selected for a special screening at the Council for Social Work Education Annual Program Meeting to be held in Philadelphia, PA, Oct. 30th – Nov. 2nd, 2008.  Five winners will be chosen from the top 10 (see prize details below).  The winning entries will be showcased at the Gerontological Society of America’s Annual Meeting to be held in National Harbor, MD, Nov. 21-25.

The decisions of the Contest Judges will be final and binding in all respects.  Winners of the AGE-SW/GSWI contest will be informed by e-mail and will be announced on the GSWI and AGE-SW sites.

Prize categories
A total of 5 prizes will be awarded:

  • First place (1 prize): $1000
    • First place winner also receives travel expenses paid to attend the 2008 Gerontological Society of America (GSA) Annual Conference where the winning videos will be showcased.*
      • Second place (1 prize): $500
      • Honorable mentions (3 prizes): $25 Amazon gift certificates

*Participants receiving funding for travel to the GSA Conference via other sources (Hartford Doctoral Fellows, etc.) may receive the prize money, but must forfeit the travel component of the prize.

One cash prize will be awarded to each winning video and will be sent to the person who submitted the video.  If a group submits a video, it is up to the group to decide how to divide the prize and to choose one (1) representative to attend GSA.  The winner for each contest must supply the Contest Sponsors with his/her legal name, mailing address, a valid e-mail address, and daytime and nighttime telephone numbers.

All taxes on prizes and all expenses related to the acceptance and use of prizes are the sole responsibility of the winners.  Prizes will be awarded in the form of checks.  Prizes are nonassignable.  Winners may waive their right to receive a prize.  Winners will be notified by e-mail, on or about Nov. 7, 2008.  As a condition of receiving a prize, winners will be required to complete an affidavit of eligibility, copyright license agreement and liability and publicity release (except where prohibited by law) which must be signed and returned to Sponsor within ten (10) days of Sponsor’s postmark.  Failure to timely sign and return this affidavit, agreement and release may result in the applicable winner’s disqualification, forfeiture of all interest in prizes, and the selection of a substitute winner.  Prizes not won and claimed by an eligible winner in accordance with these Official Rules will not be awarded and will remain the property of the Sponsors. 

IMPORTANT – Additional Legal Information
The John A. Hartford Foundation & AGE-SW reserve the right to alter the contest at any time.

Copyright and Other Important Requirements:
Your video submission must be your own original work and property and may not contain any commercial copyrighted music or images.  By entering the Contest, you represent and warrant to the Sponsors that:

  • your video submission is your original work and that you own all rights, including copyright rights, in your video submission;
  • your video submission does not infringe the intellectual property, privacy or publicity rights or any other legal or moral rights of any third party;
  • your video submission has not been entered in or won previous contests or awards;
  • your video submission has not been published or previously distributed in any media;
  • your video submission does not contain any defamatory, libelous, indecent or obscene material; and
  • you have obtained permission from each person whose name, image, likeness or voice (collectively, “Likeness”) is included in your video submission, such person(s) have granted you all necessary rights to use their Likeness as described in these Official Rules, and you can make written copies of such permissions available to the Sponsors upon request.  (If the Likeness of a minor is included in your video submission, such grant of rights must include a written permission from the minor’s parent or legal guardian authorizing the use of the minor’s Likeness.)

Video submissions deemed by the Contest Judges in their sole discretion to be immoral, obscene, indecent, profane or not in keeping with the Sponsor’s image will be disqualified. The Sponsors reserve the right in their sole discretion to disqualify any entry at any time which, in the Sponsors’ opinion, endangers the safety or well being of any person or fails to comply with these Official Rules.

Contest Eligibility
To enter the This is Social Work & Aging… YouTubeTM Student Contest you must be a legal resident of the fifty (50) United States or the District of Columbia, 18 years of age or older, and have a valid user account with YouTubeTM.  Void where prohibited.  The Contest is not open to employees of the Hartford Foundation or any of the programs of the Geriatric Social Work Initiative.

Rights granted to the Sponsors
By entering the Contest, you agree and irrevocably grant to the Sponsors, their affiliates and their respective assigns, agents and licensees (collectively, the “Sponsor Parties”), the unconditional, royalty-free right and license to reproduce, encode, store, copy, transmit, publish, post, broadcast, display, publicly perform, adapt, edit, exhibit, create derivative works and otherwise use or reuse your video submission, throughout the world, in perpetuity, in any media, including without limitations, the Internet.

Except where prohibited, by entering the Contest you also irrevocably agree that the Sponsor Parties may use your name, likeness, voice, photograph and any statements regarding your video submission and participation in the Contest (collectively, “Your Likeness”) throughout the world, in perpetuity, in any media, without limitation or compensation to you.  By entering the Contest, you permanently waive all intellectual property rights, privacy/publicity rights and other legal or moral rights that might preclude the Sponsor Parties’ use of your video submission and Your Likeness, and you agree not to sue or assert any claim against the Sponsor Parties (or any of them) relating to their use of your video submission or Your Likeness.

Disqualification for tampering with Contest Materials
The Sponsors will not be responsible for typographical, printing or other inadvertent errors in these Official Rules or other materials or announcements relating to the Contest.  The Sponsors reserve the right to disqualify anyone found to be tampering with or otherwise abusing any aspect of the Contest as determined by the Sponsors in their sole discretion.  The Sponsors also reserve the right in their sole discretion to cancel, terminate, modify or suspend the Contest if tampering, viruses, bugs or other causes beyond the reasonable control of the Sponsors corrupt the administration, security, fairness or proper operation of the Contest. Should the Contest be terminated prior to the stated end date, the Sponsors reserve the right to choose winners from among the video submissions entered prior to the early termination date.
