Join us in February for our 2005 White House Conference on Aging Designated Events

As part of The Gerontological Society of America’s “Civic Engagement in an Older America” initiative, GSA will be conducting town hall-style forums during the month of February. GSA invites its members to attend these free, public forums, which will be held in the following cities. If you would like to RSVP to attend one of these events, please email Christina Leone at cleone@agingsociety.org:

Thursday, February 3rd – Winter Park, Florida

Tuesday, February 15th – St. Louis, Missouri

Friday, February 25th – Phoenix, Arizona

Monday, February 28th – Boston, Massachusetts

The purpose of GSA’s civic engagement project is to determine how to promote greater civic involvement of older adults in order to improve the quality of life in communities across America. During the forum, distinguished panelists from the community will present their findings and recommendations on strategies for expanding opportunities for older adults, such as the Experience Corps and Next Chapter Initiatives.

The forums will be conducted in the style of a legislative hearing. Panelists have been invited to each forum and will include community leaders, experts on civic engagement, and representatives of non-profit organizations, government agencies, business, and academic institutions. Dick Gephardt, former U.S. House of Representatives Minority Leader, has been confirmed as a speaker for the St. Louis forum. Dorcas Hardy, chair of the WHCoA Policy Committee has also confirmed as a speaker for the St. Louis forum. Additionally, WHCoA Policy Committee members have been invited to attend each forum.

Following the panels, there will be an opportunity for public comments, questions, and participation in a survey on the topic of civic engagement. Information gathered at this event will be presented to the WHCoA Policy Committee and become a part of the five-year GSA civic engagement project.

For additional information about these forums, we urge you to visit the Academy’s web site at: http://www.agingsociety.org.
