Welcome to Ripples, an e-newsletter designed to keep interested deans and directors, faculty members, students, practitioners and others informed about the work of the Geriatric Social Work Initiative (GSWI). Grant Opportunities

New: Hartford Doctoral Fellows Pre-Dissertation Award

Awardees will be brought to GSA and will attend an institute there conducted by AGE-SW. These same students will be brought to SSWR where they will participate in an all-day institute that focuses on grant writing and research funding. Pre-Dissertation stage doctoral students are invited to apply. Awardees will be encouraged to subsequently apply for the Hartford Doctoral Fellowship that supports dissertation research in social work and aging. Hartford Faculty Scholars Program Deadline Approaches

The Hartford Faculty Scholars Program identifies outstanding social work faculty committed to teaching, research, and leadership in the area of geriatric care. Faculty Scholars receive two-year grants of $50,000 per year beginning September 1. Travel and expenses related to attending institutes and yearly GSA meetings will be provided by the program. Dr. Barbara Berkman (bb151@columbia.edu) is National Program Director. This year's deadline is February 1, 2005. For more information and to download an application form, please click here.

 

Hartford Doctoral Fellows Program Deadline Approaches
The Hartford Doctoral Fellows Program supports outstanding doctoral students at dissertation stage. Fellows receive $25,000 a year for up to two-years in dissertation support, as well as academic career consultation and leadership development. Fellows attend the annual meetings of GSA and CSWE/SSWR (attend alternate years) where special pre-conference institutes are offered. Dr. James Lubben (lubben@bc.edu) is National Program Director. The Second Annual Research Training in Aging and Social Work: July 17-26, 2005, in Duluth, Minnesota

Nationally recognized experts in research methodology will lead a training institute specifically designed for social work faculty who received their doctoral degree at least 3 years ago in any area of social work. The institute, funded by the National Institute on Aging (NIA), aims to strengthen participants' knowledge and skills that are essential for developing an active research agenda and integrating scholarship with teaching. Deadline for applications is March 15, 2005. Please visit the program's website for additional information.

University of Michigan Postdoctoral Fellowships

Announcement from Hartford Faculty Scholars Program Committee
Beginning in the February 2006 application process, the Hartford Faculty Scholars' Program will be open to all social work faculty in addition to graduate school faculty. Doctoral level faculty members in accredited social work professional education programs in the US who have full-time appointments as associate or assistant professors will be eligible to apply. Specific information will be available when the 2006 application process begins.

GSA's 4th Annual Careers in Aging Week: April 11-15, 2005
The Gerontological Society of America's "Careers in Aging Week" is a program designed to inform people of the different opportunities that exist in the field of aging. Universities across the country participate, organizing activities, such as career fairs, panel discussions, etc. This promotion is a great opportunity for Schools of Social Work to set-up events to inform people about opportunities in the field of aging. New NIH Website for New Investigators (and others)
The NIH Office of Extramural Research (OER) has set up a new website dedicated to new investigators. It provides links to all sorts of valuable information, including tips on preparing applications. While it is aimed at new investigators, much of these resources are clearly of interest to even seasoned investigators. Learn more.

Comptroller General to Appoint Members of New Citizens Health Care Working Group
Comptroller General of the United States, David M. Walker, will appoint 14 individuals, including a chairperson, to serve as members of the Citizen's Health Care Working Group as required by the Section 1014 of the Medicare Prescription Drug, Improvement, and Modernization Act of 2003 (MMA) (Pub. L. 108-173). Individuals interested in serving for the two-year term will have an opportunity to apply online at GAO's website. The comptroller general will announce his appointments by later February 2005. Pub. L. 108-173.

"Stand Up for Others", a project recently launched by the National Association of Social Workers (NASW), is focused on getting individuals and communities more involved in helping one another.
