Research Digest: Caregivers of Individuals with Dementia Likely to Seek Referrals Based on Marital Status, Education, Perceptions

Caregivers of individuals with dementia are more likely to seek referrals for health and human services based on their marital status, education, and perception of the helpfulness of these services, according to the results of a study reported in the July issue of Social Work, the journal of the National Association of Social Workers (Vol. 49, No. 3). The theme of this year’s Annual Scientific Meeting of The Gerontological Society of America is "Promoting the Health of an Aging Population". The meeting will be held at the Marriott Wardman Park and Omni Shoreham Hotels in Washington, DC, November 19-23. The hotels are now accepting reservations. New National Center for Gerontological Social Work Education

The Council on Social Work Education (CSWE), with funding from the John A. Hartford Foundation, has established the National Center for Gerontological Social Work Education. The Center, which is part of the Hartford Geriatric Social Work Initiative, will be led by Julia Watkins, Executive Director of CSWE, and Nancy Hooyman, Endowed Professor in Gerontology at the University of Washington. The goal of the center is to promote aging content and expertise at the baccalaureate and master's level in order to prepare all students to work effectively with older adults and their families. $4.9 Million for Hartford Doctoral Fellows Program in Geriatric Social Work

A $4.89 million five-year grant from The John A. Hartford Foundation of New York City to The Gerontological Society of America (GSA) will continue and significantly expand the Hartford Doctoral Fellows program. The Hartford Doctoral Fellows program supports outstanding doctoral students whose dissertation research is focused on improving the health and well being of older persons and their families. The Hartford Doctoral Fellows program, begun in 2000, is designed to cultivate the next generation of social work faculty, who will become teachers, role models, and mentors for future generations of social workers caring for older persons and their families. Kevin Mahoney Selected as Recipient of the 2004 Maxwell A. Pollack Award

Dr. Kevin Mahoney of Boston College's Graduate School of Social Work has been chosen by The Gerontological Society of America to receive its 2004 Maxwell A. Pollack Award for Productive Aging. This honor, given annually, recognizes instances of practice informed by research and analysis, research that directly improved policy or practice, and distinction in bridging the worlds of research and practice. Dr. Mahoney is a National Research Mentor for the Hartford Faculty Scholars Program.
The award presentation will take place during GSA's 57th Annual Scientific Meeting, which is going to be held November 19-23, 2004 in Washington, DC. The award ceremony will take place in the Wilson B-M room of the Marriott Wardman Park Hotel on Sunday, November 21st at 1:45 p.m. Learn more.

Dr. Connie Saltz Corley Receives Social Work Recognition Award

Dr. Connie Saltz Corley, LCSW, a Professor in the School of Social Work and Director of the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute (OLLI) at California State University, Los Angeles, has received the inaugural 2004 Gerontological Social Work Recognition Award from the Institute for Geriatric Social Work at Boston University. The award was created to honor a social worker whose work exemplifies IGSW’s mission and who is chosen based upon their experience and dedication, leadership in the field, and their contributions to advancing social work practice at all levels. Dr. Corley is a National Research Mentor for the Hartford Faculty Scholars Program.
