Welcome to Ripples, an e-newsletter designed
to keep interested deans and directors, faculty members,
students, practitioners and others informed about the
work of the Geriatric Social Work Initiative (GSWI).
We welcome your feedback and encourage you to contribute
any story ideas, stories, resources, news and other
content to subsequent issues of the newsletter. To make

1. Mark Your Calendars for
the Following Events at APM/NGSWC, February 26-March
1, New York, NY
Age SW Membership Meeting and Reception
|
The AGE SW membership meeting and
reception, co-sponsored this year with NCGSW, the
Gero-Ed Center, and Haworth Press, is scheduled
for Sunday, February 27th, from 6-9pm. Roundtable
discussions will be from 6-7, the membership meeting
and awards will be from 7-8, and the reception will
be held from 8-9.

| Session focusing on the Practicum
Partnership Program |
|
The John A Hartford Foundation, The New York
Academy of Medicine and the CSWE Field Committee
are co-sponsoring a session entitled, "Results
and Plans of the Hartford Foundation and The New
York Academy of Medicine" on 2/28/05, from
1:30-3:00pm. The session is listed as #366 in
the final program. The session will focus on the
results of the Practicum Partnership Program six
demonstration sites and an eight year plan to
expand the PPP to 1/3 of MSW programs. Deans/Directors
and Directors of Field Education of MSW programs
are encouraged to attend.

| The recruitment breakfast will take
place on Sunday, February 27th, from 7-8am in the
Olmstead room of the New York Marriott Marquis.
All are encouraged to attend to learn about the
Hartford Doctoral Fellows Program, the Hartford
Doctoral Fellows Pre-Dissertation Award Program,
the Hartford Faculty Scholars program, and Research

| NIH Grant for Research on Retirement
Economics |
| The National Institute on Aging (NIA)
invites applications for research on retirement
economics. Annual deadlines are February 1, June
1, and October 1. For more information, click

| The Second Annual Research Training
in Aging and Social Work: July 17-26, 2005, in Duluth,
Minnesota |
Nationally recognized experts in research methodology
will lead a training institute specifically designed
for social work faculty who received their doctoral
degree at least 3 years ago in any area of social work.
The institute, funded by the National Institute on Aging
(NIA), aims to strengthen participants' knowledge and
skills that are essential for developing an active research
agenda and integrating scholarship with teaching. Deadline
for applications is March 15, 2005. Please visit the

AARP's Office of Academic Affairs has announced
the AARP Scholars Program, which will provide
scholarships for master's and doctoral students
in gerontology, aging studies, or public policy.

| The Journal of Social Work in End-of-Life
and Palliative Care announces a Call for Papers
for a Special Issue highlighting the research of
Hartford Faculty Scholars and Doctoral Fellows.
You are eligible to submit a manuscript if you have
received a grant award from the John A. Hartford
Foundation through the Hartford Faculty Scholars
Program or Doctoral Fellows Program in Geriatric
Social Work. Due date for submission of manuscripts
for this special issue is July 1, 2005. Learn

2005 White House Conference on Aging Designated
Events

As part of The Gerontological Society of America's
"Civic Engagement in an Older America"
initiative, GSA will be conducting town hall-style
forums during the month of February. GSA invites
its members to attend these free, public forums,
which will be held in the following cities: Feb.
15th in St. Louis, MO; Feb. 25th in Phoenix, AZ;
Feb. 28th in Boston, MA. If you would like to

| Potentially Inappropriate Prescription
Drug Use in Nursing Homes |
| Another AHRQ study shows that elderly
nursing home residents given potentially inappropriate
drugs intermittently over a 3-month period had an
almost 90 percent greater chance of dying the last
month of that period than similar residents not
administered such medications. The study, "Hospitalization
and Death Associated with Potentially Inappropriate
Medication Prescriptions among Elderly Nursing Home
Residents", was based on 1996 data from AHRQ's
Medical Expenditure Panel Survey. It was published
in the January 10 issue of Archives of Internal

| A new evidence review on end-of-life
care and outcomes identified a large and diverse
body of literature reflecting the large growth and
importance in the field of end-of-life care that

Living", depicts life in a nursing home seen
through the eyes of the 27-year-old janitor who
works there. The movie was filmed at a nursing home
in Kentucky and incorporates many actual residents

The number of elderly Americans in
assisted living has tripled in the last decade.
This article focuses on the social dynamics in one
facility, and some of the difficulties residents

| The Bush administration provided some
details about its proposal to add personal accounts
to Social Security, but there are still questions

Campaign |
| The National Association of Social
Workers' public education campaign seeks to increase
awareness and respect for the social work profession,
educate the public on the depth and breadth of social
work practice, expand the perception of who can
benefit from social work, and improve employment
opportunities for professional social workers. To

| Congratulations to Hartford Faculty
Scholar, Dr. Michelle Putnam |
| Dr. Michelle Putnam, a Cohort III
Scholar, recently made a contribution to The Gerontological
Society of America's (GSA) Public Policy and Aging
Report. Volume 14 (Number 4) of the GSA's PP&AR
(the Fall 2004 issue) features articles based on
the working conference that Dr. Putnam conducted,
as well as a lead article by Dr. Putnam. The editor
of PP&AR also acknowledged Dr. Putnam's contribution
to making this issue called "Aging and Disability:
Congruence or Conflict". |
