An MSW is not a requirement.  However, applicants with MSW degrees are preferred in part because we know that having an MSW enhances a person’s chances of landing a faculty appointment in CSWE accredited programs.

Students enrolled in online degree programs are encouraged to consider the Hartford Doctoral Fellows program if he/she plans to seek a full time faculty appointment in a Council on Social Work Education (CSWE) accredited program with faculty trained in gerontology and geriatrics. The applicant must demonstrate close research supervision from his/her doctoral committee members and the rigor of the applicant’s dissertation research project is a serious factor in the selection process.

Can I apply if I’m enrolled in a part-time doctoral program? The Hartford Doctoral Fellows program grants come with a requirement that the Fellow must devote at least 50% of their time to dissertation research.
