What is expected of the Institutional Sponsor? Is it important that he/she have an academic rank or that he/she be housed in the same department as the applicant? The Institutional Sponsor must be able to assist the applicant as a role model. He or she must be able to guide the applicant's professional development in all academic arenas and help the individual connect with gerontolotists across the institution. As the application states, the Institutional Sponsor is not required to be a gerontologist his/herself.

Additionally, the Institutional Sponsor must be able to intervene in the applicant's own school if an issue arises related to time needed to accomplish the demands of the Hartford Program. A faculty member is the usual choice but if the applicant makes the case for an administrator that will be fine. The sponsor letter should speak very clearly regarding the applicant's professional development in research and teaching.
