Patricia Volland, MBA, MSW

Patricia J. Volland presently serves as Senior Vice President for Administration and Finance at the New York Academy of Medicine. As Senior Vice President, she is responsible for the day-to-day and fiscal operations of the Academy. She is currently the Principal Investigator for two national projects focused on changing graduate social work education for practice in health and for practice with older adults. After completing her undergraduate education at Ottawa University, she received her M.S.W. from San Diego State University. She received an M.B.A from Loyola College in Baltimore in 1981. Ms. Volland is a member of the Board of Directors of The Altman Foundation. She is a member of the Board of Directors of Planned Parenthood of New York City; she has served on the Executive Committee, as Secretary/Treasurer, Chair of the Finance Committee, and Chair of the Program Services Committee.

Prior to joining The New York Academy of Medicine, Ms. Volland spent twenty-five years as a hospital administrator. She has held administrative and clinical social work positions at several academic medical centers, including fifteen years at The Johns Hopkins Medical Institutions. She has served as National President and Board Member of the Society for Social Work Administrators in Health Care of the American Hospital Association and was awarded the Ida B. Cannon Award for Distinguished Leadership. Ms. Volland is a Fellow of the New York Academy of Medicine, and a member of the National Association of Social Workers, the Council on Social Work Education and other professional organizations. She currently serves on the Editorial Board of the journal Social Work in Health Care and she is a member of the Health Care Executive Forum. In addition, she has participated in several mayoral and gubernatorial commissions on aging and health care, and has been the recipient of major grant support for developing community health services.

Ms. Volland edited a book entitled of Discharge Planning: An Interdisciplinary Approach to Continuity Care, and is author of several articles and book chapters on social work in health care, health care administration, and community service for the chronically ill.
